Grandmaster (GM) Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu of India captured his first overall Grand Chess Tour (GCT) championship in dramatic fashion, defeating defending champion GM Fabiano Caruana of the United States in the 2026 GCT Finals. Held Aug. 22–27 in the U.S. Chess Capital of Saint Louis, the Finals delivered a thrilling knockout battle featuring four of the world’s elite players, with Praggnanandhaa R. emerging victorious to claim the biggest title of his career on the Grand Chess Tour.

Hot off his win at the 2026 Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz, Praggnanandhaa R. commands the GCT Finals crown and $200,000. For his second place finish, GM Fabiano Caruana received $125,000. Complete results are as follows:

OVERALL 2026 GCT STANDINGS
As a leading global circuit of international chess tournaments, the 2026 GCT featured the world’s best players, including eight full-tour participants and wildcard entrants.
Players competed across five international events in Croatia, Poland, Romania and the United States for a total prize fund of $2 million over the course of the tour. The prize fund was provided by the 2026 GCT major sponsors, Super Foundation and Saint Louis Chess Club, both non-profit organizations supporting chess education and promoting the game worldwide.

2027 GCT Schedule Announced
With a new season on the horizon, the 2027 GCT is set to bring together the world’s elite players for another thrilling year of high-level competition. From intense battles across the tour to the much-anticipated Finals in São Paulo, Brazil, fans can look forward to unforgettable games, fierce rivalries, and plenty of dramatic moments along the way.
The GCT also enters a new chapter in 2027, with Michael Khodarkovsky retiring from his role as Executive Director after 11 years of leadership. Since the Tour’s inception, Khodarkovsky has played a central role in building the GCT into one of the premier stages for elite chess. Grandmaster Alex Onischuk will succeed Khodarkovsky as Executive Director, taking on leadership of the Tour as it begins its next chapter.
